I think it was during a leadership course at my church where I first gave the Old Testament books of Ezra and Nehemiah more than a cursory glance. The most striking thing about the narrative is how God used the pagan kings of Persia to not only allow the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the Temple, but they paid for it as well!

I watched the cardinals feeding as the wolf moon crept its way through the branches of the crepe myrtle tree. The ladies were merely chocolate brown silhouettes against the dormant earth. But the moonlight caught the red coats of the gentlemen turning them a deep crimson as dusk settled over the land.
